Drug Medical Information
AGE AND BEHAVIOR: MEMORY THEORY - SENSORY MEMORY IN SUMMARY
Beyond PM and SM there is sensory memory. Sensory memory takes the form of a very short-term experience which may be more perceptual than memorial. Sensory memory, in visual form at least, seems less well developed in the old than in the young and one study indicated that few older adults may be able to develop it in the first place.
No studies of sensory memory in its auditory form in relation to age have been carried out, but something that may be close to it has been— dichotic stimulation where one-half of auditory information is processed for recall (SM) and the other half thought "passed through" a perceptual system. The results of studies are mixed in indicating whether this latter type of recall is age-related.
In addition to sensory memory, PM, and SM, there may be a separate very long-term memory system. The evidence suggests that very long-term recall is not affected in an overall way by age, but people of different ages tend to recall different things. One study suggested that sociohistoric events experienced during the age period 15 to 25 years seem the best remembered, better than when events are experienced later in life. Perhaps people are more receptive at that age than later and so events have more impact value at that time. This may just be another way of saying that the information is most deeply processed at that time and so remains in storage longest. This interpretation would place long-term recall in SM.
Old memories do seem to decay in time for everyone but, often, this is hard to measure independently of the age of the person. For example, one study measured recall of names and faces of high school class members. This is a one-year memory for most 19-year-olds but a 50-year memory for 68-year-olds. To study age effects, the age of the memory must be the same for all age groups.
