Bromley (1958) showed that digit span decreases only very slightly with age, and Talland (1965) found this result with word span—one aspect of his results seems to limit the validity of his conclusions. The PM is thought to be independent of the vocabulary size since it is only a "read-out" and does not refer to the total possible variety of responses. Craik did not find this in his analysis; PM was related to vocabulary size. He attempted another, but related, method of estimating PM, and found essentially the same result. Thus, while Craik was clear in his conclusion regarding the aging of PM and SM, he indicated that this conclusion was based on less than optimum estimates of the PM.
A concluding note regarding operational definitions may be in order. In the final analysis, retrieval is defined by recall performances; PM is nothing very different from recall measured with very short lists; and SM is not very different from recall scores measured with longer lists.
Accordingly, we refer back to the earlier discussion of task difficulty and repeat: In a great variety of situations, when the task is very easy, older people are not seen as very different in their performances from vounger people; when the task is hard, they differ more.
