Psychologists testing human subjects think in human terms and use concepts appropriate to the subjects, thus, semantic processing. Psychologists testing animals necessarily think in other terms, but some of the underlying concepts may be similar. Clearly, the term "semantic" applied to animals is inappropriate; but such terms as neural organization, or short-term recall, are not inappropriate. The human studies and animal studies may provide some operationally equivalent information.
Information becomes fixed in memory by what is called the consolidation of traces. It is the opposite of trace decay or forgetting. The concept of consolidation is useful to many, as seen in its picturesque description by Pribram (in Melton, 1967):
‘If one receives a severe blow on the head, the immediately preceding events cannot be retrieved. This ... is not for all events. It depends on context, it depends on what kind. . . . But if the blow is severe enough, complete amnesia can occur . . . there must be a time during which experience is erasable by such trauma. The converse ... is called the consolidation hypothesis; that is, an experience takes time to settle in, since the longer it has been set the less easily it is erased.’
