AGE AND BEHAVIOR: RETRIEVING MEMORIES - RETRIEVAL FUNCTIONS - SUPERIORITY OF RECOGNITION OVER RECALL – ERBER’S TESTS
Erber tested young (19-30) and elderly (65-75) women for recognition and recall memory by giving them a list of 24 words to learn and remember. The test of recognition required the subject to identify each of these words when presented with four others not given before. This procedure was the same one used by Schonfield. In addition a longer list was given for learning—60 words. Unlike what Schonfield found, the old did not recognize as many words correctly as the young with either list length (24 or 60 words). While recognition memory was better with the shorter list than the longer, this was equally true for old and young. Essentially the same results were found with recall of the words learned as in recognition, but the difference between young and old was greater in recall.
Erber's results seem to be typical of many studies, although there are exceptions. Perlmutter (1978), for example, also found recognition performances of newly learned information better than recall, but the extent was similar for people in their 60s and their 20s. Further, an unusual result was reported by Adamowicz (1976). He presented for learning simple and complex geometric patterns, rather than verbal materials, and reported that in one part of the study the older adults' recall memory was the same as that of their younger counterparts, but their recognition memory was somewhat poorer. He concluded that "the data do not provide support for a retrieval deficit hypothesis".
