AGE AND BEHAVIOR: MEMORY THEORY - MEMORY SYSTEM

Learning and memory are measured in comparable ways. In typical laboratory learning studies, be they of paired-associate "learning," serial "learning," or some other learning task, the subjects report what had been learned—their recall is measured, even if the learning had just taken place. The measurement of this learning sometimes is called "immediate memory."
A question asked by several investigators is whether the more primary problem in later life is "immediate memory" or delayed, longer-term recall. Evidence was seen that when age groups are matched for immediate recall performance, they are similar in delayed recall performance. However, other evidence was also seen, i.e. differences with age in delayed recall over and beyond differences in immediate memory. This latter evidence might suggest that there is more than one kind of memory process.
Most investigators, probably, would maintain that there is a memory system called primary memory (PM) and another one called secondary memory (SM). The two are different in several ways but the most important is that PM is temporary and limited in capacity, while SM is longer term and of enormous, unlimited capacity. PM is typically measured by presenting the subjects with a short string of digits, letters, or words and measuring recall "immediately." This is the memory span. This recall is almost a "read out"; it is of the psychological present, of what was just now experienced. Old people and young people are not very different in PM, if they are different at all.
PM, being of limited capacity, involves only a very short string of span items. If the string is long, for example 15 digits, it is called supra-span and much or all of it is thought residing in SM, not PM. What characterizes SM is active processing of the information on the part of the memorizer. To improve learning, to fix memories in mind for extended periods of time, it is necessary to organize, to integrate the new information with what is already known. The information must be made meaningful and this is why SM is sometimes called semantic memory.
Age groups are very different in SM—the younger people perform better. Instructions to organize, or providing meaningful processing techniques, help both the old and the young, with some studies showing relatively more benefit to one age group and other studies showing more to another age group.
